2024 Pac Global Student Design Competition

Finalist | Hosted by Kellogg’s & PAC Global | 2024

OVERVIEW

The challenge was to redesign the Pringles U.K. packaging to provide the consumer a more universal design with better inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability. By selecting a substrate that aligns with our environmental goal and redesigning the structure with our re-imagined user journey in mind, we were able to create a never-seen before consumer package that would capture strong consumer attention and interest.

In early 2023, Professor Stuart Werle, who taught our packaging design course at OCAD University, offered our team and three other teams the opportunity to participate in a competition following the course. We explored multiple design concepts, and the direction we ultimately chose was deemed strong enough by the committee established by Professor Stuart for us to represent OCAD University. We refined and further developed this chosen direction, resulting in a final design that is both revolutionary and inclusive.

Our transition to paper pulp and sustainable materials in our Pringles packaging represents a major step towards environmental caution. This eco-friendly shift not only allows us to align with our green initiatives and appeal to eco-conscious consumers, but we also saw this new material as an opportunity to promote socializing and sharing. We've reimagined Pringles' brand image, focusing on sustainability, shareability, and strong online presence, targeting a more aware generation of consumers.

The key challenge we resolved during the redesign was to reduce the number of substrates used. Our redesigned structure is made entirely of fully recyclable, recycled paper pulp. Moreover, both the barrier coating and adhesive material we selected to use are sustainable. As a result, we have successfully decreased the types of substrates used by 40%. Simple yet clear recycling instructions are also inherited and enlarged from the original Pringles package, to improve the recycling rate post-use.

Our redesign is full of innovation and trend setting. By utilizing paper pulp, we're aligning with the future of packaging design and redefining the interaction between consumers and Pringles crisps. With a focus on space efficiency and enhancing user interaction, our redesign not only optimizes space utilization and user experience, but it also advocates the initiation of socialization between people, all while maintaining the structure's protective qualities in a compact yet efficient form.

Our redesigned package was designed with universal design principles in mind. It's accessible and appealing to a diverse range of abilities, accommodating different preferences and needs. The packaging is straightforward and user-friendly for all backgrounds, communicates essential information effectively, minimizes risks and unintended consequences, requires minimal physical effort to access, and is easy to reach, grasp, and store, thereby enhancing usability and inclusivity for all consumers.

The redesigned package addresses the needs of a diverse consumer base, including individuals with dexterity challenges, vision impairments, on-the-go snackers, office workers, vegans, eco-conscious and people with obesity. Achieved through modern design techniques such as NaviLens, Braille, enhanced legibility and contrast, ergonomic design, portion-conscious, shareable and portable packaging, using vegan-approved and sustainable materials.
